Delta Camp Recap!

Last week we had our very popular Nueces Delta Adventure Camp! It was a blast and all the kids (and adults) had a great time. We switched things up this year and camped out at Lake Corpus Christi. This ended up being a really great choice for us because we got to swim during our free time and we avoided the mosquitoes. Everyone learned something new, had new experiences and of course had a blast making new friends. We had a great group of kids for this camp and we were constantly joking around with each other. We’ve taken sometime to write down a brief overview of our week together so you can get an idea of what we did! Let’s get started…

Day One Fun!

On day one, we met the parents and kiddos out at the Nueces Delta Preserve. We held a short orientation after check in, played a name game and then loaded up the trailer and headed out to the lake. When we got to the lake, we picked out our campsite and started to set up camp. This was a little challenging because the wind was so crazy coming off the water. We struggled to set up tents in the wind but eventually we got them all done. Once camp was set up, we took a quick dip in the lake before making dinner and getting ready for bed.

Day Two, Woo!

Day two was a full day at the Youth Odyssey Ropes Course. We started our morning off doing low elements on the ground. This is where we challenged the group mentally. The problems we presented them with forced them to work together and come up with creative solutions to achieve the goal. After a short lunch break, we went out to conquer the high elements. The kids faced their fear of heights and climbed up three story poles, walked across wires and zip lined. They all had a great time and did so well pushing themselves. When we got back to camp, we were all hot and sweaty so of course we took an hour to cool off in the lake before getting ready for dinner. Once everyone was full we took some time to write in our journals and got ready for bed.

Day Three Was the Day For Me!

This day was the most anticipated day of the week because we went scuba diving! To open things up James Gourley, the scuba instructor, did an orientation about scuba. He us taught different hand signals, commands, scuba safety, and more. The first lessons consisted of learning how to use the equipment such as operating the oxygen regulator to get comfortable breathing underwater. Some of the kids were blown away because they were breathing underwater for the first time ever. After those skills were mastered, they were checked for buoyancy levels so they could float, ascend, and descend in the water. With correct buoyancy levels, it was now time to put their skills to practice. Everyone swam and made their way through a hula hoop obstacle course in the pool. To finish the day, James had everyone participate in a real treasure hunt. People, the treasure hunt got real! Everyone became the ultimate pirates to find all the lost booty, which was 20 dollars worth of quarters!

Day Four Was Never a Bore!

Day four was all about CPR & First Aide. After a quick breakfast, we went to our board member James Gourley’s home for the class. The kids appreciated the break from the blistering heat being inside and were very attentive. They all were great when it was their turn to show off their new CPR skills on the practice dummy, Anne. And they asked some great questions about first aide and how to help their loved ones when they are in need. James also fed us some great pizza for lunch! We thanked him for letting us into his home, feeding us and teaching a great class. Then, we headed back to the lake for an afternoon of kayaking. We kayaked on the lake for about 2 hours. Once we were done it was time for dinner, journals and bed.

Day Five, What a Ride!

Suuh Duude! We had a brand new activity on our last full day together, surfing lessons! Texas Surf Camps put together an amazing surfing lesson for us at Bob Hall on Padre Island. All of us also received some cool swag, Texas Surf Camp hats, from Craig our surfing instructor. Craig started the lesson teaching us 4 main dangers to look out for while surfing: people, the sun, stingrays, and jellyfish. Right before everyone was issued a surfboard, Craig taught us parts of the surfboards and how to operate them. The last thing we learned was how to paddle and get up on the board. These were the skills the kids all loved because it helped them do the most important thing, ride the waves! Plus they looked super cool posing their skills on their boards. The kids picked up all the skills and techniques so well, and despite the crazy waves on surfing day they all caught some waves!

Bittersweet See Ya Laters!

Oh the day that is full of laughs and tears, the last day of camp. It was time to say our goodbyes, but not before we showed all the parents what we learned. All of the kids put together an amazing skit displaying all the fun things we did all week. They all split into pairs to talk and act out each day. Afterwards was an exciting moment, the kids received 4 certificates each! Each kid received a 2 year CPR/First Aid certification, PADI Basic Skills certification, Delta Camp 2018 completion certificate, and the infamous Camp Award. Although Delta Camp 2018 came to an end, we had our best ever Delta Camp yet! We look forward to next year’s adventure!
