Parenting Corner- It Takes A Village

Have you ever heard the phrase “Asiye funzwa na mamae hufunzwa na ulimwengu” or rather, “It takes a village to raise a child?” Such wise words! The origin of the saying points to ancient african cultures. This African proverb is the heart beat of healthy parenting. Doctor’s call it “supplemental parenting.” Everything points to the same principal, parents can’t do it alone! Everyone needs a little help sometimes whether it be by coaching them in a youth program or babysitting for the parents. We all need a little help sometimes, and that is okay!

The Village is Here to Help

Children’s brains are constantly developing. A parent cannot be around 24/7 to make sure that what they are exposed to is all positive! This is where other people come into play. It is extremely important to have a good foundation of friends and family members to help you mold your youth into a decent person! Even ancient civilizations understood this concept. The idea of a village raising a child come from the acknowledgement that it IS hard to sculpt and mold a tiny person into a full blown good adult BY YOURSELF! Even when you have a husband or wife to help, the task often requires breaks for your sanity! A parent is a counselor, care taker, chef, nurse, etc. all in one. It is okay to need help from others because that is a ton of work!

What is a "Villager?"

Supplemental parenting is having an Aunt, Uncle or trusted individual that can also influence your youth in a positive manner! Often times a child may not feel comfortable coming to their parental figures with personal issues for fear of retribution. That is where a "village," meaning a trusted coach, counselor, or family member comes in! That way your child has an adult you are comfortable with giving them advice when they do not want to address it with you!

This month’s action step:

I challenge you to evaluate who is in your child’s life. Do they have a viable mentor? If they do not, who could you ask to step in a little more? Do you trust them? Getting your youth involved in programs like Youth Odyssey will provide positive mentor-ship and supplemental parenting to life skills you are trying to teach them at home!
