Getting Hooked On Knots

So you want to go fishing but you're not an experienced fisherman. Being able to tie the quickest and easiest fishing knot is crucial to catching that big fish. The best knots to use is any knot that you can tie quickly and easily. From my experience, the two easiest knots to master are the Palomar knot and the Clinch knot. As far as quick and easy knots go, these are the go to knots for anyone new to fishing. Both knots are strong and quick to tie and both work well with mono line (they are not quite as tough when using a braided line).

Palomar Knot

You might be asking yourself, "okay great but how to I tie these knots?". Well you're in luck! First up is the Palomar Knot, which in my opinion, is the easier knot to tie.

  • Step 1

Double your line to make a loop, then push the loop through the eye of the hook.

  • Step 2

    Tie a loose overhand knot.

  • Step 3

Pass the loop around the end of the hook.

  • Step 4

    Pull on line to tighten.

  • Step 5

Trim the loose end of the line.

Clinch Knot

The Clinch Knot is another great knot for beginners. It is slightly more complicated than the Palomar Knot but, is still a great go to knot.

  • Step 1

Thread the line through the eye of the hook, then make 5 to 7 wraps around the line with the loos end.

  • Step 2

Thread the loose end of the line through the loop closest to the eye, then back around inside the loose section of line until tight.

  • Step 3

Pull both ends of the line until tight.

  • Step 4

Trim the loose end of line if necessary

Clinch Knots

Now that you have mastered these two fishing knots, you are ready to cast out your line and catch that big fish that you have always wanted. Keep in mind that when tying these knots, you want to get the line a little wet (whether that means using your own spit or a little water) to tighten the knot down. This will help secure your knot in place and prevent it from breaking or unraveling.
