Youth Odyssey offers a structure format that is both fun and educational. Participating in activities in the wilderness, away from the distractions of modern civilization, fosters self-reliance, respect and a sense of responsibility for youth’s own actions. In addition to learning outdoor skills, teens respond to physical challenges and learn to overcome obstacles. Youth are guided through activities, which enable them to build communication skills, self-confidence, problem-solving, leadership skills, trust, and team building.

Teens expand their horizons beyond concrete and asphalt of the inner city to learn about themselves, nature and the environment. Each youth spends 3 to 5 days with caring adult mentors in an environment which teaches them more effective ways of relating to others and healthier ways of valuing themselves. Each trip in The Adventure Wilderness Trip Program includes at least two of the following challenge activities:

  • Camping
  • Hiking/Backpacking
  • Fishing
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Rock Climbing
Life skills can be learned and practiced. Each activity on the Adventure Wilderness Trip Program provides a “challenge” and encourages youth to stretch themselves beyond their self-imposed limits by facing the challenge. Challenge Activities encourage the evolution of judgment, personal responsibility, and awareness of group needs. Youth Odyssey programs challenge youth in ways to help them discover talents and resources within themselves. The activities build on the success and achievements to encourage youth to assume responsibility and to develop the six core life skills promoted on each trip.
